  1. Turn on the power of the camera.

  2. Press the wireless button to turn the wireless LAN function on.

    • The wireless lamp flashes.
  3. Display the Wi-FiTM settings of the smartphone.
  4. Select the SSID of the camera from the network list and enter the password.

    • The serial number printed at the bottom of the camera is the same as the SSID and password.
      The SSID is “THETA + Serial number indicated by (B) + .OSC” (in this case “THETAYL00001017.OSC”). The password is the numbers indicated by (A) (in this case “00001017”).
    • The password can be changed from the smartphone.
    • The password is initialized by pressing and holding the wireless button while the power is on. The power turns off automatically at this time.
    • When the wireless LAN connection is complete, the wireless lamp lights.

Wireless Lamp

The wireless lamp indicates the wireless LAN connection status of the camera.

Lit:
The wireless LAN function is on. (The camera is connected to a wireless LAN.)
Flashing:
The wireless LAN function is on. (The camera is not connected to a wireless LAN.)
Unlit:
The wireless LAN function is off.

Date and Time Settings

Set the camera in advance so that the plug-in “REMOTE CONTROL” can be run.

  1. Turn on the power of the camera.

  2. Press and hold the mode button.

    • The camera status lamp flashes white.
  3. Press and hold the shutter button on the Remote Control TR-1 to set it to the pairing state or connection standby state.
    • When the camera is connected to the Remote Control TR-1, the camera status lamp lights white.

Note

  • After running the plug-in “REMOTE CONTROL”, the response speed of the wireless LAN slows down until the connection between the camera and the Remote Control TR-1 is established.

Disconnecting the Remote Control TR-1 from the Camera

  1. Press and hold the mode button.

    • The camera status lamp turns off, and the Remote Control TR-1 is disconnected from the camera.

Resetting the Connection Information

When you want to connect another device to the camera or when the Remote Control TR-1 cannot be connected correctly, press and hold the wireless button to reset the connection information.

Caution

  • If you reset the connection information, the wireless LAN password is also reset.

Connect the camera directly to a smartphone via a wireless LAN, and then use the smartphone to make settings to connect the camera to a wireless router.

  1. Turn on the power of the camera.

  2. Press the wireless button to turn the wireless LAN function on.

    • The wireless lamp flashes.
  3. Display the Wi-FiTM settings of the smartphone.
  4. Select the SSID of the camera from the network list and enter the password.

    • The serial number printed at the bottom of the camera is the same as the SSID and password.
      The SSID is “THETA + Serial number indicated by (B) + .OSC” (in this case “THETAYL00001017.OSC”). The password is the numbers indicated by (A) (in this case “00001017”).

    • The display returns to the [Wireless LAN client mode] screen.
    • At this point, the wireless button operation changes from switching between “Off” and “On” into switching among “Off”, “Direct mode” (direct connection to a smartphone), and “Client mode”.
  9. Tap [Authentication settings].
  10. Enter the password.
  11. Tap [Specify a password].
  12. Press the wireless button of the camera.
    • The camera enters the client mode, and the wireless lamp lights or flashes green.
    • In the client mode, the camera searches for the wireless router and establish a connection with it. When the camera cannot establish a connection with the wireless router, the camera enters the direct mode.
  13. Connect the smartphone to the wireless router.
  14. Tap the [Shooting] tab or [Cam images] tab.
    • When multiple cameras are available for connection, a list of cameras is displayed. Tap the name of the camera to connect to.
  15. Enter the password.
    • The serial number printed at the bottom of the camera ((A) in Step 4) is the default password.

Wireless Lamp

The wireless lamp indicates the wireless LAN connection status of the camera.

Lit in green:
The wireless LAN function is on. (The camera is connected in the client mode.)
Flashing in green:
The wireless LAN function is on. (The camera is not connected in the client mode.)
Unlit:
The wireless LAN function is off.

Date and Time Settings

  • When the camera is connected via a USB cable, the lamp lights green and the battery is charged. The lamp is unlit when charging is complete.

  1. Connect the camera to the computer using the provided USB cable.

  2. Remove the USB cable after charging is complete.

Caution

  • If the power lamp flashes in red, remove the USB cable and stop charging.
  • Use the provided USB cable for charging. It may take time for the battery to charge or the battery may not charge at all when a USB cable other than the provided USB cable is used.
  • Connect the cable directly to a USB port on the computer. Do not connect the cable via a USB hub. It may not be possible to charge via some USB hubs.
  • When charging, be sure to insert and remove the USB cable while the computer is turned on. If the computer is restarted while the USB cable is inserted, the computer may not recognize the camera.

Charging Time

The camera is charged in approx. 200 minutes (at 25°C (77°F)).

Note

  • The time described above is a guide for full charging. The charging time differs according to the remaining battery level.
  • If the remaining battery level is low, it may take time for the camera to be recognized by the computer.

    Flashes while capturing video.

  9. Memory warning lamp

    Indicates the remaining number of images that can be captured.

    Unlit:
    Remaining number of images that can be captured: 1300 or more (Remaining memory: 5 GB or more)
    Lit:
    Remaining number of images that can be captured: 500 or more but less than 1300 (Remaining memory: 2 GB or more but less than 5 GB)
    Flashing:
    Remaining number of images that can be captured: Less than 500 (Remaining memory: Less than 2 GB)
  10. Power lamp

    Indicates the power status. (Details)

  11. Power button

    Turns the power on/off when the button is pressed and held.
    Puts the camera to sleep when the button is pressed.

  12. Wireless button

    Turns the wireless LAN function on/off. (Details)

  13. Mode button

    Switches among the still image capture mode, video mode, and live streaming mode. (Switching to the live streaming mode is possible only when the USB cable is connected.)

  1. While pressing the wireless button, press the power button on the camera to turn the power on.

    • The camera status lamp lights green.
  2. Place the camera.
  3. Connect the camera to a smartphone via a wireless LAN or Bluetooth®.
  4. Start the basic app for smartphone.
  5. Tap to start the self-timer.
    • Tapping EV at the bottom of the screen displays the slider for correcting the exposure. If you check a still image and feel that it is too bright or too dark, adjust the brightness and capture the image to obtain the desired brightness. Moving the slider to the right brightens the image. Moving the slider to the left darkens the image.
    • You can make settings such as shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, white balance, shooting method, live view, and post-view on/off to suit the purpose of your shooting.
    • Countdown starts and shooting is performed 5 seconds later.

Caution

  • If the shutter speed is set slower than 1/8 seconds in the manual mode, a sound is heard both at the start and end of shooting. If images are captured with the noise reduction set in the auto mode, a sound is heard both at the start and end of shooting. At this time, images are not saved if the power is turned off before shooting is complete.
  • When shooting in the auto mode with the noise reduction or HDR rendering set, fix the camera in place using a tripod to prevent the camera from moving.
  • The capture mode is limited to the still image capture mode. (The self-timer cannot be used for the video mode.)

Note

  • If an image is captured while the camera is connected to a smartphone with the GPS function enabled, position information is recorded for the image.
  • If [Transfer method] is set to [Move], still images are deleted from the internal memory of the camera after they are transferred to the smartphone.
  • Still images can also be captured using the shutter button of the camera. However, these still images are not transferred to the smartphone.
  • If the shutter speed is set slower than 1/8 seconds in the manual mode, all lamps turn off. If images are captured with the noise reduction set in the auto mode, all lamps may turn off.
  • The default countdown time is 5 seconds.
  • If the shutter button is pressed during countdown, shooting can be performed immediately.
    (The self-timer is canceled.)
  • To cancel the self-timer, press the mode button.
    (If the remaining countdown time is less than 2 seconds, the self-timer cannot be canceled.)
  • The countdown sound volume is proportional to the shutter sound volume.
    (When the shutter sound is off, the countdown sound is off either.)
  • The settings below can be made for the basic app for smartphone.
  • Changed countdown time is kept even if the camera power is turned off.
  • To cancel the self-timer, set [Shooting method] to [Normal shooting].

    1. Connect the camera to the computer using the provided USB cable.

    2. Press the mode button to select the live streaming mode.

      • On the [THETA] and [STORAGE] folder display screens, you can copy, move, and delete still images and videos.

    Viewer

    You can display a desired area of a spherical image taken with the camera, and zoom in or out to check details in the image.
    The screens of “RICOH THETA for iPhone” are used as examples in the following descriptions.

    Caution

    • A 3G or LTE line is used for sharing in Step 9 even if the camera is connected to a smartphone via a wireless LAN. Therefore, this operation needs to be performed in a place where this communication is possible. If sharing images via a wireless LAN, change the wireless LAN connection to an access point.
    • When using “RICOH THETA for Android” to connect the smartphone to the camera via a wireless LAN, you may need to switch network connections to post images. Therefore, when you want to use the camera by connecting it to the smartphone after posting images, reconnect them.
    • When an image is posted to a social networking service, it is compressed by the social networking service and may become grainy. Check the specifications of the social networking service for details.

    Note

    • Images are uploaded to the dedicated site “theta360.com”, and a link to the uploaded images is posted to the social networking service.

    • If the camera is used near a broadcast tower or high-tension wire, a noise may occur.
    • While shooting videos, camera operation sounds may be recorded.
    • If the holes for the built-in microphone are blocked, 360 degrees spatial audios may not be recorded properly.

    Camera Status Lamp

    Some lighting statuses of the camera status lamp show that it is not possible to shoot. Refer to the following and check the status of the camera.

    Lit in blue:
    The camera can be used.
    Flashing in blue:
    The camera is starting up.
    Flashing in red:
    An error has occurred in the camera.
    Unlit:
    Shooting is not possible as the camera is in the sleep mode, no more images can be captured, or no more recordable time remains. The lamp is also unlit during shooting.

    Note

    • The camera automatically enters the sleep mode if no operations are performed for a set period of time (default setting: 3 minutes). Shooting is not possible in the sleep mode. Press the power button to enable shooting, and then press the shutter button to capture a video.
    • Orientation information may not be recorded correctly if a magnet or other magnetic item is placed near the camera.
    • If no more time remains for shooting, delete images from the camera.

    • Note that if fingerprints, dirt, etc. get onto the lens, image quality may deteriorate.
    • When dust or dirt does get on the lens, do not touch it directly with your fingers, and either use a blower (available in stores) to blow it off, or a soft cloth to gently dust it off.
    • Wipe the lens particularly carefully after use at the beach or around chemicals.
    • If the camera fails to work properly, consult the nearest service center.
    • Never disassemble the camera by yourself, as this is dangerous.
    • Do not get volatile substances, such as thinner, benzine, or pesticides on the camera. This may cause a change in quality, paint to peel, etc.
    • If the camera exterior becomes dirty, wipe it clean using a dry soft cloth such as a glasses wiping cloth, or wipe it using a thoroughly wrung out wet cloth. Do not use solvents, as doing so may cause the external surface of the camera to corrode.

    • Keep the camera out of the reach of children. Young children cannot understand the information in Safety Precautions and Cautions on Use, which may cause an accident.

    • Do not touch the internal components of the camera if they become exposed as a result of being dropped or damaged. The high-voltage circuitry in the camera poses significant electrical hazard. Contact your nearest dealer or service center if it is damaged.

    • Do not use the camera near flammable gases, gasoline, benzine, thinner, or similar substances to avoid the risk of explosion, fire, or burns.

    • Be sure not to drop or apply any sudden force to the camera.
    • While you are carrying the camera, be careful not to hit it against other objects. Take special care not to hit the lens.
    • In an environment where the temperature changes suddenly, condensation may occur in the camera, resulting in troubles such as fogging of the glass surface or malfunctions of the camera. If this occurs, place the camera in a bag to slow the temperature change as much as possible. Take it out of the bag after the temperature difference from the atmosphere has decreased to a fairly small amount. If condensation occurs, wait until the moisture has dried before using the camera.
    • Do not get the camera wet. Do not operate the camera with wet hands. This can result in malfunction or an electrical shock.

    Battery

    Setting Items

    Connection:
    The connection status between the camera and the smartphone can be checked.
    Change Wi-Fi Password:
    The wireless LAN connection status can be checked and the password can be changed. Follow the procedure below to change the password.
    1. Enter a new password (8 or more characters) and tap [Change Password] at the bottom of the screen.
      • Single-byte alphanumeric characters and symbols can be used. (Spaces cannot be used.)
    2. When the password has been changed successfully, press the wireless button of the camera to turn the wireless LAN function off and back on.
      • The password is not changed until the wireless LAN function is turned off.
    3. Delete the old camera information used before the password change in the Wi-FiTM settings of the smartphone.
    4. Enter the new password in the Wi-FiTM settings of the smartphone and connect to the camera.

    Caution

    • The password can be changed only when the camera is connected to the smartphone.

    Note

    • Note that the previous password can no longer be used.
    • If you have forgotten the password, press and hold the wireless button to restore the default password. The power turns off automatically when the password is reset successfully.
    Cam Bluetooth settings:

    The on/off status of the camera Bluetooth function and GPS continuous transfer function can be checked, and the status can be switched on/off.

    Wi-Fi frequency band:
    The frequency band for wireless LANs can be changed.

    Note

      • When the frequency band is set to 5 GHz, use the camera indoors only.
      • The changed frequency band becomes effective when the wireless LAN function is turned on next time.
    Camera settings:
    The following camera settings can be checked and changed.

    Sleep time:
    The length of time before the camera enters the sleep mode can be set. (3 minutes, 5 minutes, 7 minutes, 10 minutes, OFF)
    Camera shutter volume*:
    The volume of the shutter sound can be set. (High, Medium, Low, OFF)
    Transfer method*:
    You can select whether to keep the images on the camera when transferring images from the camera to the smartphone. Select [Copy] to retain the images in the internal memory after transfer or select [Move] to delete the images from the internal memory after transfer.
    Plug-in*:
    The function enabled when the plug-in is run can be checked.
    Camera version*:
    The firmware version of the camera can be checked.
    Camera license*:
    The licenses used for the camera can be checked.
    My Settings:
    You can save shooting conditions set with a smartphone on the camera.

      Auto:
      The shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and white balance are adjusted automatically according to the shooting environment. The image correction method can also be selected from the noise reduction, DR compensation, and HDR rendering.
      The camera returns to this mode each time the power is turned on.
      Tv (Shutter priority):
      The shutter speed and white balance can be set.
      ISO (ISO priority):
      The ISO sensitivity and white balance can be set.
      M (Manual):
      The shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, and white balance can be set.
    5. Make settings for each item.
      • Move your finger over each setting value to select desired settings.
      • The section displayed in white is the current setting.
      • The setting ranges and options that can be selected for each item are as shown below.
        Shutter speed:
        1/8 to 1/25000 (Auto, Shutter priority), 60 to 1/25000 (Manual)
        ISO sensitivity:
        Still image: ISO 64 to 1600 (Auto), ISO 64 to 3200 (ISO priority, Manual)
        Video: ISO 64 to 6400
        Live streaming: ISO 64 to 6400
        White balance:
        Auto: Adjusted automatically.
        Outdoor: Adjusted for shooting outdoors (when sunny).
        Shade: Adjusted for shooting in the shade.
        Cloudy: Adjusted for shooting when cloudy.
        Incandescent light 1: Adjusted for shooting in incandescent light.
        Incandescent light 2: Adjusted for shooting in incandescent light.
        (More red remains than when using [Incandescent light 1].)
        Daylight color fluorescent light: Adjusted for shooting in daylight color fluorescent light.
        Natural white fluorescent light: Adjusted for shooting in natural white fluorescent light.
        White fluorescent light: Adjusted for shooting in white fluorescent light.
        Light bulb color fluorescent light: Adjusted for shooting in light bulb color fluorescent light.
        CT Settings: Adjusted with a specified color temperature value in the range 2500 to 10000 K.
        Tap in the upper right-hand corner of the screen during shooting still images to turn on [CT Settings].
      • Tapping EV displays the slider for correcting the exposure. Moving the slider to the right brightens the image. Moving the slider to the left darkens the image.

    Caution

    • If the shutter speed is set slower than 1/8 seconds in the manual mode, a sound is heard both at the start and end of shooting. If images are captured with the noise reduction set in the auto mode, a sound is heard both at the start and end of shooting. At this time, images are not saved if the power is turned off before shooting is complete.
    • When shooting in the auto mode with the noise reduction or HDR rendering set, fix the camera in place using a tripod to prevent the camera from moving.

    Note

    • Shooting condition settings are retained until the power is turned off or the settings are reconfigured.
    • For videos, only the auto mode can be selected for the shooting mode. Settings such as the shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, white balance, and exposure cannot be changed.

    Changing the Still Image Capture Mode Settings

    Tap in the upper right-hand corner of the screen during shooting still images to change various settings for the still image capture mode.

    Shooting method:
    The shooting method can be selected from [Normal shooting], [Interval shooting], [Self-timer shooting], and [Multi bracket shooting].
    Display after shooting:
    You can set whether or not to display the image after shooting.
    CT Settings:
    The color temperature setting can be turned on and off.

    Note

    • The settings can be made for the interval shooting to capture images at a fixed interval.
      Set [Shooting method] to [Interval shooting], and make the following settings.
      • Interval: 4 seconds to 60 minutes
      • Total shots: 2 to 200, Not specified
    • For the self-timer shooting, the countdown time can be selected from 10 seconds, 5 seconds, and 2 seconds.

    Changing the Video Mode Settings

    Tap in the upper right-hand corner of the screen during shooting videos to check and change various settings for the video mode.

    Microphone gain:
    The gain of the microphone can be set.
    [Normal] Used when the ambient sound volume is normal.
